This article explores in what ways student teachers’ learning activities in a teacher education programme can be characterised as deliberate practice. Based on an in-depth exploration of 574 learning activities, the results highlight the different ways in which activities in teacher education programmes can be designed, the different motivations students have to engage in them repetitively, and different ways in which feedback can be organised, within contextual constraints posed by all professional environments.

Effect of Faculty Member’s Use of Twitter as Informal Professional Development During a Preservice Teacher Internship
The purpose of this study was to identify preservice teachers’ attitudes regarding Twitter as an informal professional development tool during their internships. The results reveal that preservice teachers who followed a Twitter account as an informal professional development medium during internship viewed the experience as helpful, particularly with respect to learning about new classroom resources, classroom strategies, and classroom technologies.

This article explores an effort to rethink curricular decision-making with a group of public pre-K teachers working in a context of curriculum escalation and commitment to play-based pedagogy. Through a professional development program designed to support developmentally and culturally responsive early mathematics, the authors examine how teachers took up the idea of engaging in mathematics with 4-year-olds in a way that married content knowledge and home practices.

This study examines the in-the-moment moves facilitators make in two different video-based professional development programs to offer a framework for facilitation with video. The authors then examine patterns in facilitation across both contexts and identify practices that are unique to the goals of each setting.

Professional Learning in the Lives of Teachers: Towards a New Framework for Conceptualising Teacher Learning
This study explored the continuing professional learning of teachers in a range of Australian schools. The findings revealed that three sets of major influences on teachers’ engagement with professional learning and the quality of that learning. These influences were isolation, cost, and the professional and personal life stages of teachers.

Redesigning Academic Essays to Promote Teacher Reflection on Selected Issues of Learning and Teaching Related to the Current Educational Reform in Hong Kong
This article describes the design of an assignment structure that promotes teacher reflection on important issues related to a major education reform in Hong Kong. This article reported a grounded model explaining how this innovative assignment structure promotes reflection. The model situated the reflective assignments within the local teaching context in Hong Kong. The model also highlighted the importance of different forms of assistance and guidance in facilitating teachers’ reflective engagement in completing these cognitively demanding assignments.

Teacher Professional Development through Collaborative Action Research: Impact on Foreign English-Language Teaching and Learning
The authors are a group of English-as-a-foreign-language teachers at a secondary school in Argentina. The authors decided in 2011 to investigate their teaching practices through collaborative action research so as to improve their students’ learning opportunities and thus revitalise English-language teaching in their context. This report particularly focuses on the evaluation facets of their collaborative action research project so as to encourage other teachers and teacher-researchers to adopt collaborative action research to improve their own practices.

This article uses research-based criteria to analyze and compare seven faculty development models for teacher education technology integration. The comparative analysis reveals that some models are distinctly more effective than others. The analysis also shows that not a single study describes a faculty development model that meets all of the fundamental criteria for excellence in faculty development.

The Masters in Teaching and Learning: A Revolution in Teacher Education or a Bright Light Quickly Extinguished?
In summer 2009, the Labour government in England introduced of the Masters in Teaching and Learning (MTL), which was fully funded by the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA). The proposed aim of the MTL is ‘to improve teacher quality to raise standards in education. The authors discuss what the MTL might mean both for in‐service teacher education and initial teacher training. The authors also explore issues relating to the structure and delivery of MTL.

This study draws data from a public university teacher education program that specifically sought to prepare White, middle-income, novice teachers to work in a large, urban school district. Specifically, the authors sought to find out what characteristics and environmental supports were important to these teachers in their first years of teaching. The results of this study identified seven criteria that emerged from interviews of 12 new urban teachers in exploring what makes them feel successful in their jobs. Themes included access to significant adult relationships, ability to mentor others, ability to problem-solve, hope, high expectations for self and students, sociocultural awareness, and the teachers’ need to access professional development opportunities.
