Diary-Based Strategy Assessment and its Relationship to Performance in a Group of Trainee Teachers

Strategies of preservice teachers in real learning situations are explored in this article. The strategies of real learning situations are recorded in a diary and compared with others. Findings indicate that use of diaries has a positive effect on knowledge acquisition and serve as a valuable learning tool.

Comparative Analysis of Expectancies of Efficacy in In-Service and Prospective Teachers

The article examines beliefs regarding teaching in student teachers. A sample of 339 participants took part in the study and following a factor analysis, three principle factors emerged: classroom management/discipline efficacy, personal teaching efficacy and general teaching efficacy. Classroom management and discipline efficacy scored higher among working teachers, with other differences relating to the number of inservice years.

Male Teachers as Role Models: Addressing Issues of Masculinity, Pedagogy and the Re-Masculinization of Schooling

This article focuses on the call for more male teachers as role models in elementary schools and treats it as a manifestation of 'recuperative masculinity politics' (Lingard & Douglas, 1999). Attention is drawn to the problematic gap between neo-liberal educational policy–related discussions about male teacher shortage in elementary schools and research-based literature which provides a more nuanced analysis of the impact of gender relations on male teachers' lives and developing professional identities.

Examining recent research on neighborhood influences on child development, this review focuses on social influences on school adjustment in the early elementary years. A model to guide community research and intervention is presented. The components of the model of integrated processes are neighborhoods and their effects on academic outcomes and neighborhoods as moderators of effects of parental behavior on school-related outcomes.
