The Professional Learning Community as Subversive Activity: Countering the Culture of Conventional Schooling
The objective for this study was to gain new knowledge about the experience of teachers in the early stage of professional learning community (PLC) development. This study reports findings from semi-structured focus group interviews with teachers in an urban/suburban high school after one year of school-wide professional development introducing the PLC as a school-wide practice. The authors conclude that The authors claim that as long as PLC work is perceived by teachers as a professional development option that they may choose to embrace or ignore, then systemwide change is unlikely to occur. The authors suggest that by establishing an urgent cause, the leader may then offer assistance to the staff in addressing the problem in the form of an initiative to cultivate collaborative reflective practice with the goal of transforming the school into a PLC.

Imagining, Becoming, and Being a Teacher: How Professional History Mediates Teacher Educator Identity
The context of this self-study is a professional development project involving primary-grade teachers in one public school and two university teacher educators. The authors are two teacher educators who are both former public school elementary-grade teachers.The aim of this self-study was to illuminate their understanding of their own professional identities as teachers. Analysis of their narratives revealed that fundamental aspects of their teacher identity have remained constant as their careers have evolved. Regardless of the setting, the age of their students, or the expanded expectations of the university to engage in research and professional service, the authors are, first and foremost, teachers.

This study focuses on current efforts underway in one western US state to prepare educators’ for meaningful participation with families. The participants were Directors and faculty from 43 accredited Institutions of Higher Education (IHEs) preparing pre-service teachers, administrators, and student support personnel. The results indicate that current course offerings and field practice requirements may not match prevailing views regarding the need for and importance of family engagement in promoting student success.

The current review of literature examines efforts in higher education to address family engagement and the impact of various pedagogical approaches on preservice teachers. The findings reveal a narrow sample of empirically based research.However, these studies offer insights regarding pedagogical approaches that increase teachers’ confidence and self-awareness, improve educators’ knowledge of diverse families, and enhance teachers’ ability to use knowledge about families and communities to improve instruction.

Pre- and In-service Teachers’ Beliefs about ELLs in Content Area Classes: A Case for Inclusion, Responsibility, and Instructional Support
The current study documents differences between pre- and in-service content area teachers’ beliefs about: whether English language learners (ELLs) should be included in content area classes, the kind of instructional support (IS) they should receive, and responsibility for ELLs’ language and academic achievement. The findings revealed that pre- and in-service and female and male teachers held similar beliefs about ELLs’ inclusion in mainstream classes. However, several significant differences were found between both service and gender groups' beliefs about responsibility for ELLs’ language and academic development.

The purpose of this self-study was to identify implications of self-positioning for the author's practice in the stories she tells on her both professional knowledge landscapes: as a teacher in a junior high school and as a teacher educator. Three issues were raised during the course of this study. The first issue revolves around the author's two plotlines of becoming a teacher and why she believes that these plotlines are competing and not conflicting. Another issue raised by this study centers on the idea of the interrogative act of asking someone how they became a teacher, and what assumptions are concomitant with that kind of an inquiry on various landscapes. The third issue deals with changes in her interaction patterns with students on both the public school landscape and the university landscape.

Beyond Induction: The Continuing Professional Development Needs of Early-Career Teachers in Scotland
This article describes a research project which explored the CPD needs and priorities of early-career teachers and the barriers to their participation in Scotland. The project employed a three-staged methodology: nominal group technique interviews with teachers in four local authorities; a national online survey; and a stakeholder consultation exercise. The analysis of data led to the development of six strategic recommendations. These recommendations related to issues such as the different needs and work in different contexts of year two to six teachers, the responsibility of local authorities and schools to support year two to six teachers, ect'.

Learning To Be A Culturally Responsive Teacher through International Study Trips: Transformation or Tourism?
This article presents findings from a qualitative study that investigated the experiences of 15 Australian pre-service teachers who attended a short-term study programme in either Korea or India. Three interrelated themes emerged from the interview data: (1) dissonance resulting from physical discomfort; (2) dissonance resulting from culturally different communication styles and expectations about appropriate behaviour and interaction and (3) dissonance resulting from incidents/events that challenged the pre-service teachers’ views of themselves and their own cultures.

This article is part of a larger evaluation study of Reduction of Stigma in Schools (RSIS). The Reduction of Stigma in Schools is a professional development program aiming to empower educators to create affirming environments for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Questioning (LGBTQ) youth. Interview data indicate that though workshops utilized a critical approach, what teachers embraced was a call to understand and “protect” LGBTQ students through the “safety” discourse and investment in one time “visibility” or “celebration” events as symbols of improved school climate.

This article reports a self-study of the experiences of a teacher educator who has developed and taught a university-based action research course. The author adopted self-study as the methodology, using qualitative data collection methods. The article describes three themes which emerged during the action research: 1) Teacher culture clashes with the research world, 2) Teachers’ assumptions about teaching and learning and 3) Action research, domesticated by traditional research.
