The purpose of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of mentor preparation and learn more about how formal education can prepare mentors for their role. Therefore, questions were asked about why teachers participate in mentor education and their perceived learning outcome, as well as what parts of the programme they find valuable. The findings reveal that students in the mentor education programme seem to be intrinsically motivated, given that they enrolled in the programme without any benefit except from their own satisfaction. Furthermore, the programme provided the participants with concepts that made it possible to talk about mentoring. In addition, during the programme their focus changed from themselves and what to do to focus on the other and facilitating others’ developments. During the programme they became more confident in their roles as mentors.

Impact of Structured Group Activities on Pre-service Teachers’ Beliefs about Classroom Motivation: An Exploratory Study
The purpose of this study was to examine the value of providing pre-service teachers with opportunities to examine, justify and challenge their beliefs about classroom motivation in interaction with peers. Results showed participation in this study influenced pre-service teacher beliefs. Specifically, participants’ beliefs about classroom motivation shifted from a sole emphasis on individual cognitions to acknowledging also the importance of educational practices. The major change over time, however, was the consolidation of pre-service teachers’ motivational beliefs.

A Community College Instructor’s Reflective Journey Toward Developing Pedagogical Content Knowledge for Nature of Science in a Non-majors Undergraduate Biology Course
This article reports on the challenges and successes encountered by an in-service teacher, Sarah, implementing nature of science (NOS) for the first time throughout four units of a community college biology course. The in-service teacher, who participated in this study, found that through action research she was able to grow and assimilate her understanding of NOS within the biology content she was teaching. A shift in orientation toward teaching products of science to teaching science processes was a necessary shift for NOS pedagogical success. This process enabled Sarah’s development of PCK for NOS. As a practical example of putting research-based instructional recommendations into practice, this study may be very useful for other teachers who are learning to teach NOS.

Getting a Grip on the Classroom: From Psychological to Phenomenological Curriculum Development in Teacher Education Programs
Using a phenomenological lens, the authors argue that this approach to teacher education is flawed in two respects: (1) the intellectualist approach misses prepropositional forms of meaningful coping and dealing with an environment that define everyday teaching and (2) does not adequately describe what constitutes “excellence.” In conclusion, they suggest teacher education curricula shift from promoting teaching as critical self-reflection to promoting tactful coping.

Counter-Intuitive Findings from Teacher Education Accreditation Council’s Surveys of Candidates and Faculty about Candidate Knowledge and Skill
This article describes the results from surveys conducted by the Teacher Education Accreditation Council regarding the knowledge and skills of graduates from teacher education programs. The students, faculty, and cooperating teachers in a large national sample of accredited teacher education programs rated the graduates of the programs in the ‘more than adequate’ to ‘excellent’ range with regard to the graduates’ knowledge of subject matter, pedagogy, multicultural understanding, instructional technology, the graduates’ skill to teach caringly and effectively and their capacity to develop professionally in their careers. Marginally lower ratings were given for the institution’s commitment to the program, the program’s facilities and resources, and the student support services. These results also occur in varyingly high degrees within each of the 50 programs in the sample.

The purpose of this research was to explore perceived roles and responsibilities of professionals providing support for mathematics instruction in a large school district. The elementary mathematics leaders who completed the survey indicated a statistically significant lack of alignment between their current role and their idea of what should be their role as an elementary mathematics leader. Further, there were statistically significant differences on 24 of the 30 items between coaches’ actual roles and what they thought that their roles should include.

Looking Back on Experienced Teachers’ Reflections: How Did Pre-service School Practice Support the Development of Self-efficacy?
This study investigates how Estonian teachers with more than 25 years of professional experience recall and describe their pre-service teaching practice experience. This study indicates that supportive professional communication is essential for developing self-efficacy. The majority of the interviewees emphasised, either explicitly or implicitly, the importance of cooperation between student teachers and supervisors in the form of discussion and feedback. Both positive and negative experiences during their school practice contributed towards meaningful experiences becoming the catalyst of self-reflection. Many participants seemed to have experienced at least one particular feature in common, such as low perception of a sense of community within the school.

Reflective Practice as “Enrichment”: How New Early Childhood Teachers Enact Preservice Values in Their Classrooms
This study followed a cohort of new early childhood teachers from preparation into their first year of teaching, giving voice to their challenges and triumphs, and insight into the elements of their preparation program which they continued to value and build on in their classroom practice. The findings revealed that participants’ perceptions on those elements of the program which best guided their decisions in practice, such as reflective thinking about their daily work and child observation and inquiry. Overall, although the participants expressed feeling less prepared in terms of specific curricula which aligned with their particular teaching settings, they seemed to feel most prepared in those skills that can be applied broadly across a wide variety of classrooms and educational contexts, such as observation, reflection, and differentiation.

In this article, the authors examined teachers' beliefs and actions concerning the teaching of the seminar course in colleges of education in Israel. As regards the students, they examined self-efficacy, knowledge of the writing process, and the contribution of the seminar course to their writing product. The findings show the lack of a unified method of teaching the seminar course. Analysis of teachers' statements revealed six different perceptions concerning the purpose of the course. However, the common belief of most teachers stated that the seminar work affords an opportunity to combine theory and practice in the field. Results also show strong teacher involvement in the pre-writing stage, for instance, in generating ideas and motivating students to explore and write evidenced-based papers. Most teachers favor creative and reflective thinking at the expense of academic writing conventions.

This article reports on a case study of a school that had ongoing coaching for up to six years. The study focused on coachees’ perspectives, in particular what factors allowed them to achieve their set coaching goals. The investigation into longitudinal coaching (one to six years) indicated how coaches positioned themselves or peers, when reflecting on and seeking to establish why some coaching goals were more achievable than others. A key finding was that coaching goals were deemed attainable when they aligned with coachees’ specific focus, which was reflected by the six core themes that emerged: Pragmatic I, Pragmatic We, Student Driven, Team Driven, Data Driven, Research Driven. The seventh theme (temporality) indicated that over time coachees’ dominant concerns shifted to become less of a focus with other overriding needs emerging.
