The current paper examines the impact of implementing module‐based professional development for teachers (MBPDT) in the Philippines. Findings revealed that the experimental group of teachers had greater professional content knowledge compared with the control group after five weeks of implementing MBPDT. However, the experiment did not yield significant effects on the teachers’ commitment levels or on their pupils’ mathematics proficiency levels.

Parsing the Language of Racism and Relief: Effects of a Short-term Urban Field Placement on Teacher Candidates’ Perceptions of Culturally Diverse Classrooms
This three-year study explores the effects of one-week urban education program on non-urban teacher candidates. Findings reveal that the placement improves confidence in cross-cultural and general teaching abilities. Furthermore, short program yields big changes in views of urban youth, schools and teachers. Participants report professional, intellectual, social and emotional growth. Experience increases interest in urban schools for future employment.

Preparing Teacher Leaders: Perceptions of the Impact of a Cohort-Based, Job Embedded, Blended Teacher Leadership Program
This study was designed to examine teachers’ and principals’ perceptions of the impact of a graduate program designed to prepare teacher leaders. Impact was investigated through interviews with 20 graduates and 6 principals. the study documents perceived transformation of teachers’ frames of reference: two related to teaching, and two related to leadership.

In this article, the author describes his work with Goddess, a sixteen-month-old child who has never laughed. The author was assigned to work in her classroom as part of his clinical internship during his graduate studies in mental health counseling and human development. The author explores the ways in which Goddess 's relationships with her mother and teachers help her learn to laugh. The author concludes that the mutual transformation that occurred between Goddess and the important relationships in her life has inspired and sustained a support network for her, thereby greatly improving her future prospects.

In this article, the authors explore newly qualified New Zealand secondary teachers’ varied accounts of induction. The authors claim that multiple interpretations of objectives for induction programs are a significant source of this variation. With reference to an activity system framework, the authors identify four primary objects of induction that were represented in the induction accounts as follows: ‘orientation to learning about the context’, ‘fitting into the school’, ‘completing registration requirements’, and ‘becoming a professional inquirer’.

In this article, the authors examined the relationship between mentees’ perceptions of success with the mentoring relationship, and their achievement of the intended outcomes of the program. To examine the complexity of the relationship that can exist between students' satisfaction and students' learning, the authors report data from their own work with high school social studies students. Analysis of survey and interview data collected from mentees showed that they appreciated different experiences than those that led to the outcomes intended by the program designers.

Teachers Attending to Students’ Mathematical Reasoning: lessons from an After-School Research Program
The purpose of this article is to provide evidence that teachers’ observations of students’ mathematical activity in research project on students’ development of mathematical ideas can provide rich opportunities for teachers to learn about students’ mathematical reasoning. Nine mathematics teachers and 24 sixth-grade students participated in the IML project, which took place in a middle school, located in an urban, low-income, and minority community in the United States. The results of this study suggest that teachers’ observations of students’ mathematical activity in IML-type settings might help teachers develop an understanding of mathematics that is effective for teaching.

This article examines a few of the emergent cases that have used technology in educational assessment from the perspective of innovation and support for teaching and learning. The assessment cases were drawn from contexts that include large-scale testing programs as well as classroom-based programs. Assessment programs should be designed to produce results that allow educators and policy makers to address a variety of questions about how a nation, state, district, school, program, group, or individual is performing. The article concludes that extensive technology-based systems that link curriculum, instruction, and assessment at the classroom level might enable a shift from today’s assessment systems to a balanced design.

Assessment of a University-Based Distance Education Mentoring Program from a Quality Management Perspective
In this article, the authors describe and evaluate the efficacy of a unique program designed to mentor university faculty in online instruction. In the DEMP, learning about teaching online takes place when faculty members who possess superior knowledge of instructional design serve as mentors. The mentors engage with protégés, professors who are newer or less experienced in online education. The results of this study indicate that the DEMP is effective.

The current study reports the relationship of an undergraduate course in family and community relations to the teaching practices of 1st-, 2nd-, and 3rd-year elementary and early childhood education graduates of a mid-sized Midwestern university. Quantitative measures indicated minimal differences between groups. Qualitatively, however, treatment group members reported engaging families in creative, less standardized levels of involvement than members of the control group.
