Critical consciousness as a response to student disengagement: an initial teacher education case study
In this paper, the authors use an engagement framework to understand the experiences of university students midway through their initial teacher education programme. Analysis of interview transcripts revealed that engagement is being influenced negatively by a convergence of political, economic, structural and psychosocial factors. Despite the influence of these converging factors, some students maintained high levels of engagement, while others adopted survival strategies not conducive to deep learning. The authors argue that one way to deal with disengagement is to support learners to develop critical consciousness, a concept that includes learning agency, learning success, learning well-being and learning social justice.

This study examines the general level of effective teaching behavior of pre-service teachers teaching in secondary education. It also investigates the role of several contextual and personal characteristics in explaining differences in effective teaching behavior and the link between effective teaching behavior and pupils’ academic engagement. The results show substantiate differences in the level of effective teaching behavior between pre-service and experienced teachers. It was found that several contextual and personal characteristics determine differences in effective teaching behavior. Furthermore, the importance of effective pre-service teaching behavior for pupil engagement was established. The authors conclude that findings suggest that when pre-service teachers display better effective teaching behavior, the more pupils’ academic engagement is achieved.

Faculty as Mentors in Undergraduate Research, Scholarship, and Creative Work: Motivating and Inhibiting Factors
The purpose of this study was to examine faculty engagement in mentoring practices related to the training of undergraduate student researchers. Furthermore, the authors examine the perceived sources of support and barriers to such engagement. The findings reveal three primary supports and challenges. Faculty participants noted internal funds/compensation, student support, and other professional support as instrumental in influencing their decisions to engage as mentors in undergraduate research, scholarship, and creative work (URSCW). Conversely, time, inflexibility surrounding compensation, and lack of recognition were the primary challenges noted.

Motives for Becoming a Teacher and their Relations to Academic Engagement and Dropout among Student Teachers
The purpose of this study was to examine the motives for Swedish student teachers to study to become teachers and to explore the relationship between teachers’ motives and their academic engagement and dropout rates at the end of their studies. The findings reveal that the students enrolled in teacher education due to mainly altruistic motives, such as a desire to help and support students and contribute to society, and intrinsic motives, such as perceiving teaching to be stimulating and being interested in the particular school subjects. Extrinsic motives such as reliable income and secure job conditions were not as important to them. In addition, the findings showed a negative significant relationship between the altruistic motive and dropout, mediated by academic engagement, whereas the relationships between intrinsic and extrinsic motives and academic engagement were not significant.

Caring Relationships in School Staff: Exploring the Link between Compassion and Teacher Work Engagement
In this article, the authors used a moderated-mediation model to examine the direct and indirect effects of compassion and teacher work outcomes such as emotional vigor, burnout, organizational commitment, and job satisfaction. This study demonstrates that everyday acts of compassion generate feelings that seep into individuals’ attitudes and outcomes. The findings revealed that expressions of compassion toward teachers to be positively associated with key teacher work outcomes including emotional vigor, organizational commitment, and job satisfaction, and negatively associated with teacher burnout. Furthermore, the findings indicate that compassion may serve a major role in teachers’ coping abilities with student-misbehavior stress.

Teaching Motivations in Hong Kong: Who Will Choose Teaching as a Fallback Career in a Stringent Job Market?
This study aims to examine the factors that motivate teacher education students to choose teaching as a career in Hong Kong. The results showed altruistic and intrinsic motivations were the most important teaching motivations. These motivations correlated positively with planned teaching engagement. A major new finding of this study is the identification of two distinct types of fallback career. Two factors along this line of reasoning were extracted from our factor analysis. However, although two types of fallback career motivation were identified, only one correlated negatively with planned engagement.

Prospective Teachers’ Perceptions of Instrumentality, Boredom Coping Strategies, and Four Aspects of Engagement
This study examined the mediating roles of prospective teachers’ boredom coping strategies in the relationships between their perceptions of instrumentality and four aspects of engagement. The results demonstrated that perceived instrumentality, boredom coping strategies with the exception of cognitive-avoidance orientation, and four aspects of engagement were significantly related to each other.

Why Volunteer? The Complexities of International Pre-service Teachers’ Intercultural Adjustment Experiences through Community Service Engagement
This article offers a hermeneutic view of the adjustment experiences of five international pre-service teachers who have volunteered to be tutors in schools and unpaid helpers within local community centres. The findings highlight a range of cultural and personal dimensions associated with the process of pre-service teacher professional development and their intercultural engagement with members in the host society.

Pathways to Critical Consciousness: A First-Year Teacher’s Engagement With Issues of Race and Equity
In this article, the author asserts that critical racial consciousness is cultivated by context and performed—and often performed differently in different settings. The author considers the ways in which a White first-year teacher performs critical racial consciousness in the context of her urban fifth-grade classroom. The findings of this study fall into three themes—racial identity reflection, awareness of inequity, and challenges to engagement. The author asserts that “discourses of possibility” related to White racial consciousness can be encouraged in teacher preparation courses. The author concludes the article with implications for preservice teacher education and in-service teacher development.
