“That Fuego, that Fire in their Stomach”: Academically Successful Latinas/os and Racial Opportunity Cost
This article discusses the racial opportunity cost of academic achievement for Latina/o students who graduated from urban high schools and participated in a larger study of 18 high-achieving students of color. The article focuses on the ways the school context influenced their success. Interviews with the seven Latina/o participants reveal that while the original findings encompassed their perspectives, there were additional dimensions to their experiences that expanded the notion of racial opportunity cost.

The purpose of this article was to examine the characteristics of the challenges and rewards of the classroom assessment . This analysis revealed that educators must understand and analyze four facets or surfaces of classroom assessment including the obstacles, obligations, outcomes, and opportunities. The authors explained the characteristics of each facet and its influences on student growth, teacher development and institutional improvement.

Family Background, Entry Selectivity and Opportunities to Learn: What Matters in Primary Teacher Education? An International Comparison of Fifteen Countries
This article examines the effectiveness of teacher education programs from fifteen countries with respect to mathematics content knowledge (MCK) and mathematics pedagogical content knowledge (MPCK) as cognitive outcomes after equalizing their teacher intake. Data from the comparative TEDS-M study revealed that the mathematics content knowledge (MCK) and the mathematics pedagogical content knowledge (MPCK) of primary teachers differed significantly at the end of teacher education between the participating countries and between teacher education programs within countries.

Does Moving to Better Neighborhoods Lead to Better Schooling Opportunities? Parental School Choice in an Experimental Housing Voucher Program
The present article uses mixed methods to explore the relationship between housing and school opportunities for low-income families given the chance to move to less poor communities through the federal Moving to Opportunity (MTO) housing voucher experiment. Quantitative analyses suggest that new housing opportunities did not generally translate into a larger increase in school quality because families did not secure housing in communities with the highest-performing schools. Qualitative findings explore how structural constraints and parenting practices interact to affect where children attend school.

This study examines the mathematics course-taking of White, African American, and Latino students in racially diverse schools and the effects of different opportunity structures in those schools on college preparation and college-going. This study uses data from the Adolescent Health and Academic Achievement Study (AHAA) and its partner study, the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health). Evidence consistently suggests that schools can play an active role in the provision of opportunities for social mobility or in the exacerbation of social inequality, depending on how they are structured.

This paper analyses the results from a study conducted among 283 full-time Postgraduate Certificate in Education course (PGCE) students in Norwegian universities in the autumn of 2006. The students responded to a questionnaire examining their motivation to take the PGCE course and their motivation to become teachers.

Literacy Training for Early Childhood Providers: Changes in Knowledge, Beliefs, and Instructional Practices
This paper examines the impact of the Early Learning Opportunities (ELO) initiative that provided funding to train early childhood providers to utilize the HeadsUp! Reading (HUR) curriculum in their settings. Results from this study indicate that all participants benefited from their involvement in the professional development activities. Furthermore, the findings show that those who received coaching had an advantage with respect to growth in knowledge, skills, and confidence in implementing the new strategies into their classrooms.

Student motivation typically has been studied as it relates to extrinsic (e.g., reinforcement) and intrinsic (e.g., choice) sources of influence. The observation of Grades 3–5 classrooms engaged in Comprehensive School Reform (CSR), however, unexpectedly indicated that opportunities for both rewards and choice were scarce. This study sought to better understand what might influence student motivation in these settings.The central theme to emerge from the participant observation study was the key role of opportunity in students’ learning motivation and motivation to learn.
