Developing Future Women Leaders: The Importance of Mentoring and Role Modeling in the Girls’ School Context
In this article, the author explores how mentoring and role modeling may help facilitate the development of female students’ understanding and practice of leadership in secondary girls’ school contexts. The findings revealed a variety of mentoring relationships existed in the schools studied. It was found that female student leaders were reciprocally mentors and role models to other students, whilst also mentees of older women mentors. Both the influence of and the greater need for female role models were also found to be important in supporting the development of adolescent girls for leadership.

Pre-service Teachers’ Growth as Practitioners of Developmentally Appropriate Practice: A Vygotskian Analysis of Constraints and Affordances in the English Context
This article reports on a research programme designed to explore the opportunities for, and barriers to, pre-service teachers’ growth as practitioners of developmentally appropriate practice for children aged 5–11. The analysis is framed by a Vygotskian cultural–historical perspective and points to personal, cultural and structural factors as potential constraints immanent in the various configurations produced by the pre-service teacher–environment interface.

This study aimed to investigate the impact of video models on teacher candidates’ readiness for and capacity to self-evaluate their teaching performance in an early fieldwork (EFE) lesson. The findings indicate that teacher candidates benefited by viewing videos in preparing for their teaching experience. In addition, candidates who had access to the video models and rubrics did not overestimate their performance.

This article describes the Noewegian teacher education context in which two new teacher educators, John and Karen, start work in a university. The article looks at the many roles they have to undertake in that work, and the explicit and implicit requirements they have to meet. Finally, the article examines some of the frustrations both John and Karen may face, many of which are shared by their more experienced peers, as members of the professional community of teacher educators.

Commitment to Teach in Under-Resourced Schools: Prospective Science and Mathematics Teachers’ Dispositions
In this study, the authors sought to gain an understanding of what motivates prospective teachers who are Noyce Scholars at a research-intensive southeastern US university to commit to teaching secondary level science or mathematics in school districts that have a high proportion of students who come from low-socioeconomic households.

This article analyses staff responsibilities for promoting gender equality in preschool in Sweden and Scotland. These countries represent different welfare regimes, but also display common features, both influenced by tradition and recent transnational policies and discourses. In both cases, teachers are constructed as role models who should promote certain gender values and provide children with opportunities. The Swedish curriculum places more emphasis on similarities between girls and boys, while the Scottish counterpart tends to emphasize difference more, paying attention to boys and the need for male role models.

The teacher educator is always also a teacher, and as a role model may have an important impact on student teachers' views on teaching. Becoming a teacher or a teacher educator is a long-term process of developing a professional identity, with role models being just one of the contributing factors. This study of 13 teacher educators addresses the impact of schoolteacher role models as part of the socialization process of becoming a teacher.

Alternative Mentoring of Street Girls in Bangladesh: New Identities and Non-traditional Opportunities
The article describes how mentoring and female role models enhance self-worth and for adolescent girls. The project involved low socio economic girls from Bangladesh. Qualitative data was collected from participant diaries, focus group discussions, and mentor and participant interviews were conducted.

Engaging in a self-study is a multi-faceted activity that involves not only autobiography and theory, but also students and colleagues. Learning from and with colleagues can take many forms. This article discusses the authors' experience with reciprocal classroom observation in a teacher education context. Peer observation supported our learning about our own teaching by providing suggestions for change and mutual reassurance.

Male Teachers as Role Models: Addressing Issues of Masculinity, Pedagogy and the Re-Masculinization of Schooling
This article focuses on the call for more male teachers as role models in elementary schools and treats it as a manifestation of 'recuperative masculinity politics' (Lingard & Douglas, 1999). Attention is drawn to the problematic gap between neo-liberal educational policy–related discussions about male teacher shortage in elementary schools and research-based literature which provides a more nuanced analysis of the impact of gender relations on male teachers' lives and developing professional identities.
