This study investigated the effectiveness of an approach to information and media literacy instruction for elementary preservice teachers. The authors trained the participants in a systematic research process of searching for, evaluating, and using information resources, specifically journal articles and Websites, to increase their content knowledge. The results demonstrate the importance of formative assessment and the need to provide preservice teachers with information and media literacy training so they are better able to navigate and evaluate digital-age resources to expand their content mastery and teach their students 21st-century skills.

Critically Redefining and Repositioning Media Texts in Early Childhood Teacher Education: What If? And Why?

Field-Based Teacher Education in Elementary Media Literacy as a Means to Promote Global Understanding
This article describes a university-school partnership that supports the professional development of preservice teachers and elementary teachers. The authors introduced the instructional principles and practices of media literacy education. The authors wanted to support children's critical thinking and communication skills while deepening their understanding of the peoples and cultures of the Middle East. This case study of a university-school partnership shows how a partnership between preservice teachers and elementary educators may help combat stereotypes, support critical thinking about media and technology, develop composition and creative skills, and promote children's global understanding of the people and cultures of the Middle East.

This paper identifies media literacy education as an essential framework for housing a sophisticated repertoire of knowledge, skills, and dispositions for 21st-century teacher preparation. This article illustrates the ways in which media literacy catalyzes essential knowledge, skills and dispositions by (1) contextualizing technological proficiency, (2) promoting pedagogical excellence, and (3) enacting democratic ideals.

The purpose of this study was to explore the way that knowledge is construed through global media and what effect that knowledge has on students’ responses. Data were obtained from two focus groups in which students viewed and responded to global media. The results of this study suggest that dynamic visual texts provide a venue for teachers and students to consider what knowledge global media affords. However, students should become critical viewers of media, able to carefully and thoughtfully engage with assertions and evidence to foster inquiring capacities.

Preservice Teachers' Knowledge, Attitudes, and Perception of their Preparation to Teach Multiliteraies/Multimodality
The goals of this research are to examine the preservice teachers' knowledge of multimodality/multiliteracies, their perceptions of their preparation and attitudes to teaching multiliteracies in K–12 grades. The results of this study revealed that the participants were aware of the changing nature of communication technologies and their transformative impacts on literacy forms and knowledge and skill acquisition. The study proposes concrete steps to improve preservice teacher preparation so that teachers are better prepared to teach using different modes and media in today's diverse classrooms.

This study investigates the attitudes of a sample of English, Maltese and German teachers toward the training they received to teach media education. The study also explores the teachers’ attitudes about whether and how media education should be taught in schools. The sample was consisted of 132 teachers from England, Malta and Germany. The results show that the participants felt least confident teaching television production, radio production, and website design.

This article investigates English-language-learning (ELL) youths' engagement with popular media through composing and publicly posting stories in an online fan fiction writing space. Findings reveal that contemporary participatory media, such as fan fiction writing, involve sophisticated forms of literacy that can serve as useful resources for promoting in-class learning. However, the study also suggests that students would benefit from expert guidance in the areas of critical consumption and production of media and digital texts.
