The meaning of teacher education in an exam-oriented education system: lessons from novice secondary teachers in Korea
This study investigated four novice secondary teachers’ experience and perceptions of teacher education in relation to their current work experience in a high-stakes testing context. The novice teachers commonly indicated that their preparation, which had focused on content expertise, turned out to have little significance in schools, as they mainly executed teaching to the test. Instead, their role as homeroom teachers, which was concerned with caring and supporting students, was found to have much more significance. Accordingly, they indicated that teacher education must more strongly emphasise preparing teachers for that role, which requires them to become mature, considerate, and autonomous educators. Based on this finding, this study suggests the need for a clearer conception of and emphasis on the subjectification function of teacher education that is grounded in the consideration of the fundamental vision, purpose, and meaning of teacher education in a society.

This paper outlines the process of the self-study research which the author undertook on her work as a teacher in a primary school on the west coast of Ireland. The article examines how, through reflection on and thinking critically about her work, the author gained new insight and understanding of her practice and developed a new epistemology of practice. The author concludes that in the research process, she developed a new understanding around her digital projects such that she can now perceive them as processes for developing spiritual and holistic approaches to learning and teaching.

The authors are interested in identifying and understanding community and indigenous strengths of “othered” youth as embedded in social and ecological systems. The authors used an ecological approach to dissect the experiences of “othered” youth through an investigation of their marginalization and assets. Multi-informant data with ten Native Hawaiian adolescents and five teachers and counselors of Native Hawaiian youth were used. The findings revealed five emergent themes: multiple identities, stereotypes, racism, coping strategies for racism, and cultural pride that highlight cultural assets and experiences with being the “other” at school.
