Change advocacy as coping strategy: how beginning teachers cope with emotionally challenging situations
Beginning to teach after teacher education is commonly depicted as an emotionally challenging period. Beginning teachers deploy strategies to cope with the emotionally challenging transition from teacher education and starting a position as a teacher. One way of coping is trying change the origin of the challenges. The aim of the study was to investigate how teachers in their last year as student teachers and their first year as teachers make meaning of a change advocacy strategy to cope with challenging situations as teachers. A qualitative interview study was performed. Twenty-five participants were interviewed while studying in their last year of teacher education, and 20 were interviewed again after having worked as a teacher for a year. In between, 68 self-reports were collected. The material was analysed using constructivist grounded theory tools. The findings show that as student teachers the participants identified two prerequisites to be able to use the change advocacy strategy as beginning teachers: (1) establishing teacher ambiguity and (2) challenging the perceived negative mindset. When utilising a change advocacy strategy as beginning teachers, the participants tried to reform teaching practices and attain a position of competence.

Are you positive that you’re positive?: The downside to maintaining positivity as a first-year teacher
This year-long qualitative study follows a new teacher, who had self-identified as a ‘positive person’, through her first year in the classroom to explore the ways in which she maintained that disposition in the face of the difficulties that the work of teaching entails. Using a lens of emotion states and traits, we catalogued several different strategies this teacher used to return to her ‘positive’ emotion trait. A close examination of the data through I-Poems revealed that the very strategies she used were a type of avoidance from situations that produced uncomfortable emotion states. This avoidance contributed to a false sense of positivity, a dissonant between the teacher’s reported experiences and her perceived sense of self, gradually leading to burnout. The focus on maintaining her desired emotion trait distracted from the need to process her emotional experiences to improve her practice. Implications for teaching and teacher education are discussed.

The overall objective of this study was to investigate the constraints that have occurred regarding the first-year English language teachers’ professional identity construction at five Chinese universities. The approach adopted in the study was Narrative Inquiry. Interview data with five teachers were collected and analysed through a framework that identified emergent salient themes. All the preliminary results indicated major constraints in their experiences as first-year EFL teachers in the current Chinese university context. The discussion reflects on their newly negotiated and renegotiated identity after having suffered particular dilemmas in addition to the general difficulties, and how these processes have further reformulated their outlook in ways they did not expect.

This study offers insights into the ways in which beginning elementary teachers do or do not replicate the kinds of classroom management systems used during their own childhood elementary education experiences as a result of what Dan Lortie calls the apprenticeship of observation. Results of this study indicate that, when designing their classroom management systems, first-year teachers draw from a range of both traditional and progressive influences including what they recall of their own childhood experiences, what they learned in their teacher preparation program, and what the more experienced teachers at their schools do. Possible conclusions point to the need for teacher preparation programs to remain engaged with graduates in order to help solidify what was learned through the program.

The aims of this paper are to explore novice teachers’ experiences in the Covid-19 crisis, and to examine their professional identity construction process. During the global crisis, novice teachers had to deal with unexpected challenges and take advantage of new opportunities. This study is based on 32 narratives of novice teachers in Israel who took part in a one semester online Zoom induction in two workshops. The open conversations narratives in the meetings were recorded and transcribed, and then subjected to categorical content analysis. The findings show the challenges and opportunities related to three central categories: technological, pedagogical and educational system in the novice teachers’ experiences. The main contributions of this study are: understanding the novice teachers’ experiences in the uncertainty and turmoil of the crisis, and learning about professional dilemmas and tensions which gave rise to various challenges and opportunities that that supported the construction their professional identity.

This study examines the metaphors new teachers use to describe their professional identities. The study also compares metaphors chosen immediately following graduation with those suggested part way through their first year of teaching. Findings indicate that new teachers' metaphors for professional identity show readiness for the role and a focus on pupils. The metaphors suggest that new teachers struggle to develop a professional identity during their first year.

In this essay, the author, a teacher educator in Texas, reflects on an encounter with a first-year Latina teacher, who has decided to leave the profession. Despite successfully learning and applying critical pedagogy, the first-year teacher finds herself isolated and frustrated, stuck between a societal push for standardized success and her own desire to nurture transformation among her students. In listening to first-year teacher's experiences, the author grapples with his own responsibilities as a teacher educator.

Beginning Teachers' Technology Use: First Year Teacher Development and the Institutional Context's affect on New Teachers' Instructional Technology Use with Students
This empirical research study addresses the issues of new teacher development and the role of the institutional context on new teachers' instructional technology use. The study examines two first year teachers, their development during their initial year of classroom experience, and how the institutional context they entered affected their instructional decisions about technology use with students.
