This article examines emotionally challenging expectations in the relationships beginning teachers have with students’ parents.
The data consist of narrative interviews with 17 Japanese beginning teachers.
Due to strong cultural and social norms prescribing appropriate social interactions, Japanese teachers have little leeway in negotiating parents’ expectations.
The authors found that beginning teachers described facing three emotionally challenging expectations in their relationships with students’ parents:
1) they do not fully understand what is expected of them;
2) they are expected to turn to colleagues for help with difficult issues involving parents; and 3) they are expected to endure and learn from criticism.
To cope with these emotionally challenging expectations, beginning teachers perform emotional labour.
The article presents a wider understanding of teachers’ work as a relational practice and offers insights that can be used to move beyond the discourse that frames beginning teachers from a ‘deficit’ perspective.

This study aimed to assess the impact of the Parent Teacher Education Connection curriculum on the knowledge and attitudes of teacher education candidates. The findings reveal that knowledge and attitude assessments administered before and after use of the modules showed significant improvement in knowledge and attitudes across all settings. This study demonstrated that teacher candidates experienced significant knowledge gains from pre- to posttest after studying the Parent Teacher Education Connection Modules as they were embedded in various courses of their teacher education curricula.

This study aimed to examine the process through which three student caregivers learned to develop relationships with a key infant in the context of an infant practicum course. The results revealed that the power and value of relationships were an essential context for learning about infant development, infant care and education, and preparation of infant professionals. As they developed reciprocal responsiveness with their key infants, the students shared that they experienced emotional rewards and intimate connections, and gained confidence in understanding and caring for infants. The results also highlight the importance of parent–caregiver relationships. The authors found that the caregivers benefitted from having opportunities to get to know their key infants’ families.

This article presents findings from a qualitative study of an experience that supports teacher candidates to use discourse analysis and positioning theory to analyze videos of their practice during student teaching. Using case study methods for data generation and analysis, the authors demonstrate how one participant used the analytic tools to trace whether and how she enacted her preferred teacher identities during student teaching.

In this explorative study, preparation of pre-service teachers for family–school partnerships (FSP) was examined within three teacher education institutions. Findings indicate that preparation for FSP is integrated in other courses. Attention is mainly focused on communication, there is no attention to models of FSP or to address underlying power relationships or barriers and there is no assessment on this topic. In primary programmes, more attention is paid to FSP then in secondary progammes. In addition, secondary respondents articulated fewer positive opinions than primary respondents.

This study aimed to address the expressed needs of recent teacher education graduates. In an effort to assist these new educators in meeting their professional development needs, this study designed free, voluntary workshops to target some of the issues. The participants were 56 undergraduate and graduate college students majoring in teacher education. They were divided to two groups: a treatment group and a comparison group. The findings reveal that as the conclusion of the semester, the treatment group’s perceived knowledge in this area significantly improved, more so than their peers in the comparison group. Furthermore, in general, student teaching experiences yield changes in its participants. Through their fieldwork experiences, the comparison group demonstrated significant overall gains, and most specifically in lesson planning and working with diverse students.

This study assessed teacher candidates’ readiness for parent involvement. Specifically, the study used a text-based case and carefully selected videos of simulated parent–teacher conferences to explore teacher candidates’ awareness and use of two dimensions of interpersonal communication: responsiveness and structuring. The findings revealed that candidates felt highly confident about their ability to communicate with students’ families; their levels of efficacy did not align with their actual skills: candidates made limited use of a small range of effective communication strategies; and the candidates could discriminate between effective and less-effective models of professional practice.

This study focuses on current efforts underway in one western US state to prepare educators’ for meaningful participation with families. The participants were Directors and faculty from 43 accredited Institutions of Higher Education (IHEs) preparing pre-service teachers, administrators, and student support personnel. The results indicate that current course offerings and field practice requirements may not match prevailing views regarding the need for and importance of family engagement in promoting student success.

The purpose of this study was to help pre-service teachers develop basic knowledge and skill for partnering with families on assessment-related issues. The participants were teacher educators participated in an assessment class. The participants were assigned to experimental group and control group. Results indicated that participants in the experimental group gained more knowledge about parental engagement and communicating with parents than the control group.

The authors present an analysis of the teacher interviews which were conducted in five U.S. cities with 50 preschool teachers.
These interviews were part of a comparative study in Europe and the United States of what practitioners and parents who are recent immigrants think should happen in preschool.
The authors compare the perspectives of these immigrant teachers with those of their nonimmigrant counterparts.
Specifically, the authors focus on the cultural expertise of immigrant teachers who work within their own immigrant community. One of the major findings is that preschool teachers are caught between their pedagogical training and their cultural knowledge.
