This study aims to develop the professional noticing abilities of prospective elementary school teachers in the context of the Stages of Early Arithmetic Learning. In their mathematics methods course, ninety-four prospective elementary school teachers from three institutions participated in a researcher-developed five-session module that progressively nests the three interrelated components of professional noticing—attending, interpreting, and deciding. A Wilcoxon signed ranks test was conducted and found the prospective elementary school teachers demonstrated significant growth in all three components. Selected prospective elementary school teacher responses on the pre- and post-assessment are provided to illustrate sample growth in the prospective teachers’ abilities to professionally notice.

The current article delineates the many problems experienced by English language learners (ELLs) students within special education. The article also describes a set of preservice modules that were designed for special education teacher candidates to learn about and develop strategies for working with students of diverse language backgrounds. The authors conclude that only by infusing these principles into special education teacher training programs can we hope that future generations of ELLs will not repeat the experiences that past generations have had to endure.

The purpose of this study was to theoretically and empirically identify essential characteristics for a professional development program that promotes the acquisition of teachers’ competences involved in the implementation of an ASMaT module.
A 3-step approach was used to identify the essential characteristics:
(1) evidence produced in the classroom settings of the schools;
(2) specific curriculum features of the ASMaT subject were taken into account; and
(3) evidence generated by curriculum implementation literature pertaining to effective characteristics of implementing an innovation.
Five characteristics were identified as essential characteristics that should be incorporated into a professional development program.
