Improved Lesson Planning With Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

This study presents a comparison of lesson plans by teacher candidates in a teacher preparation program before and after universal design for learning (UDL) training. After training, 45 teachers incorporated more differentiated options and varied teacher strategies based on UDL principles into their lesson plans, so that the content was more accessible to all students. The improved multiplicity of options in lesson planning demonstrates a better understanding of UDL principles; however, teachers need more experience in actually implementing the UDL principles in their classrooms.

Comparing Teachers’ Views on Morality and Moral Education, A Comparative Study in Turkey and the United States

The authors examined how K-8 teachers approach morality, moral education, and the moral development of children in Turkey and in the United States. It was found that Turkish and American teachers had different views on the definition of morality. Turkish teachers emphasized societal values and global values, which have implications for the sustainability of the Turkish nation-state. On the other hand, American teachers emphasized moral action and morality in context rather than global values.

Charting the Dispositional Knowledge of Beginning Teachers in Special Education

When graduate students enter special education programs, they arrive with dispositional knowledge that can assist or hinder them in their professional development. Over the course of two years, the researchers assessed the dispositions of beginning teachers in a special education program at a west coast state university in order to better understand and enhance the teacher education process. The results of this study describe how students entered the program with a variety of perceptions and attitudes and how course work and clinical experiences in these programs affected students' attitudes, as instructors began building on students' prior experience and knowledge.
