This review examines the research on science teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) in order to refine ideas about science teacher learning progressions and how to support them.

Novices need to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to impact student learning. One approach used to support new members is to assign experienced members of the profession as mentors. Mentors can also play an invaluable role in guidingpreservice candidates in learning to teach science. In addition, mentors are often selected based on their experience and skill in teaching science.

A proposal of a framework for what makes a science teacher educator is provided, so that a community of practice can be developed. The author describes the participants, partners and science teacher educators and how each can contribute to the community's success. The proposal offers two goals for structuring the community of practice. The first is an understanding of knowledge in practice, and the second is what we need others to understand about all the participants' professional competence.
