The Work of the Teacher-educator in Australia: Reconstructing the “Superhero” Performer/Academic in an Audit Culture
This article draws on interview data with Deans/Heads of Schools of Education in the Australian context to explore the question: How is the teacher-educator produced as a category of academic worker? Using critical approaches to discourse analysis, it presents two interlocked storylines woven with varying emphasis through the interviews. First, the teacher-educator is produced as a superhero researcher and teacher, elevated by the expectations of the Excellence in Research for Australia audit/surveillance tools. Second, there is a concomitant struggle to reconcile pressure to research with commitment to meeting the needs of schooling systems, and to addressing the work of the teacher-educator in ethical terms.

This article seeks to understand how persistent categories of written language in institutional texts support the cultural-historical production and re-production of teacher educators as kinds of academic workers in Australia. A surprising finding was the almost complete absence of the ‘teacher educator’ within these texts. Analysis revealed, instead, textual distinctions between the advertisements (shown to be preoccupied with the image and positioning of institutional priorities and the supporting materials) which were characterised by the language of Human Resources.

Reconstructing Dominant Paradigms of Teacher Education: Possibilities for pedagogical transformation in Fiji
The article examines the variant educational models that are being implemented in Fiji. The author explores the historical factors that contributed to that educational approach. The study finds that despite the mechanistic practice and local culture of teacher education in Fiji, there are indications that point to future possibilities and hope, but that dominant techno-rational, and individual cultures of practice need to be developed by a socially localized program for teacher education.
