The purpose of this study was to analyze the researcher's attempt to address the research/practice divide from the position of a teacher educator. The findings revealed that although the university at which this research was conducted offered students practicum placements throughout their time in the teacher education program, the preservice teachers had difficulty making connections between information learned in university classrooms and experiences in area elementary schools. To address the disconnect between methods coursework and the preservice teachers' practicum placements, the author intentionally planned three class field trips to elementary school. This article has implications for both teacher education programs and for the individual methods course instructor.

This paper reports on how a program based on educative supervision supported the supervisory knowledge and practices of three cooperating teachers. The findings indicated some changes in the supervision styles of the participating cooperating teachers toward educative supervision. First, the percent of speech given by the student teachers in the post-lesson conferences increased after the discussion of educative supervision in the program. Secondly, the amount and depth of talks on mathematics pedagogy increased. Thirdly, the cooperating teachers moved away from conveying their feedback directly to the student teachers; they started asking more open-ended questions to have the student teachers reflect on their teaching.

In this study, the authors examined their efforts to teach beginning teachers’ formative assessment practices, specifically to elicit and interpret students’ mathematical thinking. This study surfaced a number of important ideas about scaffolding students’ learning of practice in the context of a commonly used teacher education assignment. The findings reveal that each scaffold examined in this paper appeared to support and shape student performance. Furthermore, fixed scaffolds designed in advance and scaffolds crafted in the moment based on the unfolding circumstances were both useful in supporting and shaping student practice.

Family Background, Entry Selectivity and Opportunities to Learn: What Matters in Primary Teacher Education? An International Comparison of Fifteen Countries
This article examines the effectiveness of teacher education programs from fifteen countries with respect to mathematics content knowledge (MCK) and mathematics pedagogical content knowledge (MPCK) as cognitive outcomes after equalizing their teacher intake. Data from the comparative TEDS-M study revealed that the mathematics content knowledge (MCK) and the mathematics pedagogical content knowledge (MPCK) of primary teachers differed significantly at the end of teacher education between the participating countries and between teacher education programs within countries.

The study raises questions about the pedagogy of initial teacher education, particularly in relation to the assumptions teachers educators make about the candidates they teach. The findings suggest that the prior knowledge that students bring to initial teacher education is both a resource and a challenge for teacher educators.

Preparing Teachers to Use Technology: Considerations from a Capstone Mathematics and Technology Course
This article reports on the course entitled Capstone Mathematics, Statistics, and Technology for Teachers at Utah State University (USU). This course combines the goals of a capstone mathematics experience and those of a technology course for future teachers. The students in this course learn to use technology as they examine secondary mathematics topics from an advanced standpoint. The author concludes that technology skills can be most effectively addressed in the context of collaborative mathematics learning experiences.

The purpose of the study was to determine how learning about the integrated use of technology, pedagogy, mathematics content, and cognitive complexity would affect elementary school teachers' knowledge structure base and help them in constructing instructional units. The instructional units produced by the teachers portray a clear picture of student involvement.

Prospective Teachers’ Learning to Provide Instructional Explanations: How Does It Look and What Might It Take?
In this article, the authors trace changes in the explanations offered by a purposeful sample of PSTs before and after a mathematics content/methods course sequence. The study reveals the limitations in PSTs’ explanations at their entrance to the course sequence. It also documents PSTs’ progress in providing explanations, thus providing existence proof that this practice is learnable.
