This article addresses training for teaching English as an Additional Language (EAL) at initial teacher education (ITE) level in Northern Ireland. 15 primary and post-primary teachers participated in this small-scale qualitative study. The study investigates reflections on EAL content in ITE programmes, and the type of difficulties faced when teaching pupils whose first language is not English.

This documentary account describes professional development for teachers in the USA serving culturally and linguistically diverse students. The goal of the project was to monitor effectiveness of training in Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) and to assess the value of cognitive coaching. Findings indicated workshops were effective and produced strong commitment to the model, but resulted in a disappointing level of implementation without a coaching phase.

This research sheds light on the realities for teachers who have small numbers of EAL students in their mainstream classes, and the factors that influence their practice decisions with regard to these students. The inquiry was undertaken in four primary schools in the central North Island of New Zealand. In each school, 1 teacher in a Year 1-2 class and 1 in a Year 5-6 class participated in the research. The 8 class teachers had a range of general and EAL teaching experience. It was found that some teachers generated strategies for EAL students within the context of regular class instruction, whereas others worked with individual EAL students within the class.

The purposes of this paper are (a) to describe how the open-ended knowledge construction and communication tools TEE (The Electronic Exercise) and EF-editor (Exercise Format Editor) can serve socialconstructive language learning from a distributed cognition point of view, (b) to report how TEE and EF-editor have been used in a foreign language classroom with 25 seventh grade students for creating a Web-based tourist guide to London, and (c) to present the results of an evaluative study investigating the benefits and constraints the teacher and students experienced through this learning scenario.

In this article, the authors compare the primary teaching of English in Norway and the Netherlands, utilizing surveys. Among the issues considered were: starting age, hours of instruction, teacher competence, teacher priorities, the use of the target language for instruction, and materials used. The study placed special emphasis on the transition from primary to secondary level.
