Examining Beliefs and Practices of Self and Others: Pivotal Points for Change and Growth for Mathematics Teacher Educators
This self-study had two purposes. First, the authors were interested to examine their own beliefs and belief structures, including how these beliefs influenced their instructional practices. Second, the authors were interested to explore possible commonalities across their personal findings that could be identified as fundamental beliefs for all mathematics teacher educators that in turn might serve as tools for others’ growth. The authors identified four common fundamental beliefs about mathematics teacher education which they shared and which were instrumental in further examination of their own beliefs and practices: (1) mathematics is problematic and generated through sense-making; (2) a community of learners enhances learning; (3) mathematics teacher educators need to be explicitly aware of the learner in different contexts; and (4) teaching is complex at all levels.

This study examined how collaboration between teacher educators and leaders and teachers can promote development in teacher education, in school and in the collaboration site in school where both parties meet. The findings show that school-based development is a positive form of continuing the professional development of teachers. The author also found that both structure and culture can lay the foundation for and should interact with each other to foster professional development in school and thus lead to a developing organisation. Furthermore, the study reveals that the teacher-TE does not have a model for how teacher educators can collaborate with teachers and leaders in school or how they can collaborate at their institution to develop their work in school and research.

What Can Experienced Teachers Learn from Newcomers? Newly Qualified Teachers as a Resource in Schools
This study aims to learn more about new teachers’ perceived strengths, and how these contribute to the schools where they are applied. The findings reveal that new teachers as resources are not used in a positive way in their workplaces, even though more experienced teachers can learn from them. The authors conclude that providing new teachers with a good start means nurturing their strengths and creating an environment with a culture of sharing and cooperation with mutual exchange and challenging of ideas and experiences. Both new and experienced teachers benefit from this.

The purpose of this study was to explore the roles and perceptions of Indigenous community partners as co-teacher educators working to improve teacher preparation for Indigenous education. The author found that community partners identified three themes of active involvement to support the needs of urban Indigenous children and their teachers: (a) experiences with Native peoples, (b) professional development, and (c) community. Each of these facets advanced the conversations around the perceptions and roles of Indigenous communities as sovereign stakeholders committed to decolonization in primarily non-Indigenous teacher preparation.

This article examined the involvement of in-service teachers in teacher education programs. Specifically, the author asked: 1. in what ways have in-service teachers been involved in pre-service teacher education, beyond the traditional role of the cooperating teacher? 2. what are in-service teachers’ views on teacher involvement in pre-service teacher education and are they willing to become more involved? The author used al litrature review and a survey to collect data. Based on the literature review, there are many potential benefits to increased teacher involvement in pre-service teacher education, including the professionalization of the teaching profession, and, ultimately, better preparing pre-service teachers for the realities of the classroom. The results of the survey indicated that most teachers would consider becoming more involved, if given the opportunity.

“It Isn’t Necessarily Sunshine and Daisies Every Time”: Coplanning Opportunities and Challenges When Student Teaching
This case study examines how six coteachers planned instruction for three environmental science classes. Using sociocultural theory, the study provides insight into the complexity and challenges in coplanning such as using collective knowledge to produce lesson plans, identification of teaching resources, the importance of communication between coteachers during planning and the enactment of lessons, and teachers’ time as a limited resource.

Collaboration Beyond the Classroom Walls: Deepening Learning for Students, Preservice Teachers, Teachers, and Professors
This paper describes an action research project in the preparatory school English classroom of first author. She described how she used a social networking platform to allow for collaboration with a preservice teacher in the hopes of making student literary analysis more authentic for her high school seniors. Web 2.0 tools can be used to expose more students to a community that guides them through the shift to college discourse. The implications of this partnership are explored within this project.

In this article, the authors describe candidate outcomes from a course about collaboration that was taught in two ways: (a) as a co-taught course with faculty and candidates from social studies and special education and (b) as a course in the special education program that included only faculty and candidates in special education.

Identity in Activity: Examining Teacher Professional Identity Formation in the Paired-Placement of Student Teachers
The purpose of this study is to better understand teacher professional development in a paired-placement context. It focuses specifically on how two teacher students (STs) in Vietnam, Hien and Chinh, develop their professional identities in the collaborative setting, and how factors specific to pair-work mediate this process. Findings from this study suggest that an individual teacher’s identity influences her/his cognitive and affective perception of an event. Paired-placement created an environment whereby the student teachers’ conflicting identities, associated with different cognitive and affective perceptions of the experience, were challenged, leading to contradictions. However, within the framework of planned and supervised collaboration, the STs resolved most of their conflicts constructively and experienced qualitative development in their teaching identities.

This study explored the role that participating in a critical inquiry project (CIP) played on the development of new educators who aspire to teach from a social justice perspective. The study also examined how relationships between the first- and second-year teacher participants shaped their development as social justice educators, learners, and leaders. The findings revealed that members were able to reflect on their journey of developing as social justice educators, seeing where they started and where they were still heading. This ongoing reflection and their own perception of their development kept them committed to the group and to the goal of social justice education (SJE). The findings also showed how members learned to have each other’s backs. A third result was that CIP gave members opportunities to teach SJE to others. Finally, members felt a tremendous sense of accomplishment.
