Teacher educators’ professional trajectories: evidence from Ireland, Israel, Norway and the Netherlands
This study describes higher education-based teacher educators’ professional trajectories, i.e. their professional activities and learning as developed throughout their career. Semi-structured interviews were held with 41 teacher educators from Ireland, Israel, Norway and the Netherlands. Findings show that teacher educators were recruited mainly from schools and universities. As novices, they received some, but no formal, support. Research and teaching are the main areas for on-the-job learning. Most teacher educators have positive attitudes towards research, are active researchers and contribute to teaching. However, they believe their respective institutes are not sufficiently appreciative of teaching, given that institutes do not prioritise practice-oriented research, nor align their policies with research findings. While socially coherent and idealistic attitudes are present among teacher educators, they are predominantly responsive to institutes’ perceived individualistic and pragmatic expectations. Such expectations include contribution to their institutes’ academic status through their academic publications.

The purpose of this study is to describe the professional development needs and activities of 61 teacher educators across six national jurisdictions (England, Ireland, Israel, Norway, Scotland and The Netherlands) and to reveal influencing factors and affordances conducive to professional development. Semi-structured interviews constituted questions on professional learning opportunities and teacher education and research. Results from the interviews convey themes around the areas of (i) self-initiated professional development, (ii) the importance of experiencing professional development through collaboration with peers and colleagues, (iii) accessing opportunities to improve teacher education teaching practices, and (iv) the inextricable link between teaching and research and, consequently, the need to upskill in research skills. Discussion points that arise include the induction period, frustration and tension in navigation, haphazard professional learning and learning with, and from, each other.

What Can Experienced Teachers Learn from Newcomers? Newly Qualified Teachers as a Resource in Schools
This study aims to learn more about new teachers’ perceived strengths, and how these contribute to the schools where they are applied. The findings reveal that new teachers as resources are not used in a positive way in their workplaces, even though more experienced teachers can learn from them. The authors conclude that providing new teachers with a good start means nurturing their strengths and creating an environment with a culture of sharing and cooperation with mutual exchange and challenging of ideas and experiences. Both new and experienced teachers benefit from this.

Action Research in Pre-service Teacher Education – A Never-Ending Story Promoting Professional Development
This paper examines how student-teachers experience the process and outcome of doing action research and what the authors as their teacher-educators can learn from these experiences about facilitating the student-teachers’ processes. The findings revealed that most student-teachers experienced the process as positive and saw action research as a tool in professional development. The authors conclude that this research supports the expected benefit of action research in terms of introducing students to a tool for systematic professional development.

The purpose of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of mentor preparation and learn more about how formal education can prepare mentors for their role. Therefore, questions were asked about why teachers participate in mentor education and their perceived learning outcome, as well as what parts of the programme they find valuable. The findings reveal that students in the mentor education programme seem to be intrinsically motivated, given that they enrolled in the programme without any benefit except from their own satisfaction. Furthermore, the programme provided the participants with concepts that made it possible to talk about mentoring. In addition, during the programme their focus changed from themselves and what to do to focus on the other and facilitating others’ developments. During the programme they became more confident in their roles as mentors.

The aim of this study is to gain an insight into novice teachers’ diverse experiences. The study is conducted among nine beginning teachers in upper secondary school in Norway. The main findings indicate that there are two sides of the coin of being a new teacher. The beginning teachers want to be recognised as who they are, new to the job, and on the other hand, they want to be accepted as fully qualified teachers.
