The purpose of this article was to examine how prospective teachers (PTs) can learn to read and use educative curriculum materials in ways that support them in acquiring the knowledge needed for teaching. The authors present two extended conceptual examples of ways in which educative curriculum materials might be used to support PTs in developing the knowledge needed for teaching.

Teacher Education Students’ Perceptions of the Value of Handouts Accompanying Teacher Educators’ Computer-Generated Slide Presentations
The current mixed-methods study investigated the perceptions of 304 teacher education students regarding the learning-related value of handouts accompanying teacher educators’ computer-generated slide presentations. The extent to which graduate and undergraduate students differed in their perceptions was also investigated. The results revealed that handouts that accompany computer-generated slide presentations served as a crucial learning tool for students in their teacher education experiences. This study also found that amount of detail provided in a handout affects the degree of perceived student learning

The current paper explores how educators use film to promote critical thinking and develop citizens of character through values analysis. This article provides a model for using film to teach students to be citizens of character are provided for teachers interested in incorporating this approach into their classroom instruction. The authors conclude that teaching students to critically examine and analyze films will empower them to rationalize and defend their values, and allow students to deeply think about what it means to be an effective citizen in the 21st century.

Development of Preservice Teachers’ Ability to Critique and Adapt Inquiry-based Instructional Materials
The authors argue that teacher education programs can provide scaffolded contexts for developing teachers’ ability to critique, adapt, and design inquiry-based materials. In this paper, the authors describe a qualitative study of 17 preservice teachers enrolled in two consecutive science methods courses at a large public university on the east coast. The findings suggest that teachers improved in their ability to critique lesson plans and to suggest revisions that would make them more inquiry oriented.

Using Educative Curriculum Materials to Support Preservice Elementary Teachers' Curricular Planning: A Comparison Between Two Different Forms of Support
Educative curriculum materials are materials designed to promote both teacher and student learning. These materials may help novice teachers learn how to engage in productive curricular planning. This quasi-experimental study examines the affordances and constraints of two different forms of educative support, general supports and lesson-specific supports, in helping preservice elementary teachers critique and adapt science curriculum materials. Implications for teacher education and curriculum materials design are discussed.

Teaching for Understanding in Earth Science: Comparing Impacts on Planning and Instruction in Three Professional Development Designs for Middle School Science Teachers
This article compares and contrasts the impacts of three professional development designs. These designs aimed at middle school Earth science teachers on how teachers plan and enact instruction. Evidence from teacher survey and observation data indicated that all programs had positive impacts on how teachers planned and enacted teaching for understanding. However, differences among programs was more evident in their impacts on instructional planning.
