Beginning student teachers’ educational ideals

The aim of this study is to gain insight into the content and sources of the educational ideals of beginning student teachers. The authors interviewed twenty-four beginning student teachers within the disciplines of history and the English language from three teacher education institutes in the Netherlands. The student teachers were selected using the maximum variation sampling strategy and participated voluntarily. The authors’ findings show that beginning student teachers have various educational ideals regarding the personal, interpersonal and societal development of their students. Meaningful experiences related to forming educational ideals took place in the context of school, family, jobs and voluntary activities and societal issues. They conclude by discussing the outcomes of this study for teacher education and future research.

Convening a Network within the European Conference on Educational Research: A History of the Social Justice and Intercultural Education Network

The current article highlights the challenges facing convenors of one network, who wish to include researchers from diverse backgrounds, while at the same time enhancing the academic quality of the papers presented at the European Conference on Educational Research (ECER). This paper presents a brief history of 15 years of networking with a view to discussing some of the main issues which have emerged over the years.

Authentic and Self-directed Learning in Vocational Education: Challenges to Vocational Educators

The current article analyses the dilemmas and practical tensions in implementing competence-based vocational education. Eleven case studies were conducted in technical secondary vocational education. The results show that schools meet various fundamental issues in realising this approach. Characteristics like coaching, reflection and authenticity are scarcely found.

Education and Diversity in the Netherlands

The article shows how the Netherlands has partly accommodated itself to greater cultural diversity through compulsory reforms like intercultural education and citizenship education and through its long-established structure of public funding for pedagogically and religiously diverse schools. It also shows the double standards applied to Christian and Islamic schools in the media and public debate.
