Detecting a Sustainable Mindset through Using Content Analysis of Teacher-produced Learning Journals
Having developed and piloted a professional development blended learning course for teachers of home economics with the purpose of promoting a sustainable mindset in their students, the authors used the written learning journals by the teachers during the 15-week course to detect various aspects of a sustainable mindset, which could be attributed to the course. They assumed that the learning journals of 19 participants might reveal reflections on sustainability, the pedagogy of sustainability, a positive association between sustainability and the pedagogy of sustainability, and the development of a sustainable mindset over the period of the course. The analysis confirmed that the participants reflected a great deal on learning and sustainability as the course progressed; revealing that a positive link between teaching practice and sustainability can be observed. However, the analysis also indicated some important concepts that might have been under-emphasised in the course.

This study explored the relationship between English as foreign language (EFL) teachers’ content-specific pedagogical beliefs and their technology integration practices. Using a multiple-case-study research design, the authors examined 12 secondary-level EFL teachers’ beliefs using Johnson’s (1992) framework of skill-based, rule-based, or function-based. The findings suggested an overall alignment between EFL teachers’ content-specific pedagogical beliefs and technology integration practices. While EFL teachers used similar technology tools, the same tools were used to support different types of teaching practices depending on teachers’ content-specific pedagogical beliefs.

Mentoring the Mentors: Hybridizing Professional Development to Support Cooperating Teachers’ Mentoring Practice in Science
This article describes key features of a hybrid professional development (PD) program that was designed to prepare elementary classroom teachers to mentor preservice teachers for effective science instruction. Five classroom teachers who were new to mentor training participated in the study to document the impacts of the PD sequence. The PD combined an in-person immersion into the components of effective science instruction with online modules centered on learner-supportive mentoring practices. Findings indicated that mentors who engaged in the hybrid face-to-face and online PD more effectively coached their mentees and displayed specific shifts in their approach to mentor conversations. Participants showed statistically significant increases in their ability to use coaching as a default mentoring stance, to focus on evidence of students’ science learning, and to draw on a consistent framework for effective science instruction for their conversations.

Learning Across Boundaries: Educator and Startup Involvement in the Educational Technology Innovation Ecosystem
This qualitative case study examined what educators and startups learned from each other when participating in a 4-hour educational technology (edtech) design summit, SlowPitch, which strategically facilitated boundary crossing conversations and activities among typically siloed constituents, such as educators, researchers, developers, investors, and students, in the edtech ecosystem. The study examined what educators and startups learn from each other, the ties they form, and the resources they share when offered a chance to deeply engage with each other. The research context involved a specially designed edtech pitch event that strategically facilitated a boundary crossing opportunity through conversation across typically siloed constituents in the edtech ecosystem.

“Learning the Ropes”: Pre-service Arts Teachers Navigating the Extracurricular Terrain Extracurricular Terrain
This article presents findings from a study into the value of a pre-service teacher production as a form of professional development, from both the technical and personal development perspectives. Thirty pre-service secondary Arts teachers participated in the production. Through focus-group interviews, participants indicated the benefits of building technical understanding as well as personal benefits of engaging in an ensemble experience. All spoke of the potential transferability of what they learned to their future teaching practice. Given that Arts teachers are expected to facilitate extracurricular activities as part of their professional work, this article advocates the importance of examining ways in which rich experiences such as the production examined here should be formally embedded into pre-service teacher training courses.

This study explores the characteristics of the teacher evaluation model in Finland. Highlighting the unique qualities of the Finnish case, the authors also compare these teacher evaluation practices with the increasingly applied value-added model (VAM) for teacher evaluation across the globe. Their analysis revealed that the Finnish Model prioritises teacher empowerment and professional development by carrying out bottom-up evaluation practices. With a clear focus on teacher empowerment and professional development, this framework substantially differs from accountability measures such as VAM, which emphasize rigid data collection procedures and the use of standardized test scores to hold teachers accountable based on their students’ academic performance. This study also revealed that professional development endeavours of teachers are highlighted as the key elements in Finnish teacher evaluation.

As a means to improve teacher preparation and teacher quality that impacts student achievement, the Australian government has recently encouraged formal partnerships between tertiary providers, schools and education systems in delivering teacher education and professional development, in particular for mentors. This article documents challenges and initial findings of the first year of a school-university partnership involving an Australian regional university and K-12 teacher-mentors located in rural schools. It describes the design and implementation of a contextualised professional development model, using participatory action research to build teacher capacity for mentoring and foster a culture of collaborative inquiry.

Professional learning and development of two groups of pre-service teachers with different scientific knowledge bases and different teaching training in the course of their studies
This research study evaluated the professional development of two groups of pre-service biology teachers during a year-long biology didactics course in two different academic institutions. Verbal and qualitative analyses of lesson transcripts were employed to characterize explicit knowledge, while content and cluster analyses of the repertory grid technique were employed to characterize tacit knowledge. The group of pre-service teachers with lower content knowledge (CK) and more teaching experience during their training was concerned with student- and teacher-centered practices. The group with higher CK and less teaching experience was concerned with high-order thinking skills and the knowledge gap between themselves and their students.

“Color Does Not Equal Consciousness”: Educators of Color Learning to Enact a Sociopolitical Consciousness
This study is based on an initiative for increasing college and career readiness for Black and Latino male high school students in New York City. From data that include 58 total hours of participant observations from 24 educators of color, written documentation from culturally relevant education–professional development (CRE-PD) activities, and transcripts of six group interviews, the authors examine these educators’ work to further their own sociopolitical consciousness in relation to increasing Black and Latino male students’ college and career readiness.

Lessons for Teacher Education: The Role of Critical Professional Development in Teacher of Color Retention
In this article, the author shares analysis of interviews with 11 women of Color veteran teachers who serve in formal or informal leadership roles within social justice education. Their reflections reveal how teacher education programs—justice oriented or not—fell short in preparing them for the hostile racial climate of schools, thus putting them at increased risk of being pushed out of teaching. The article also points to collectivized teacher-led spaces of racial literacy development—framed as critical professional development (CPD)—that have helped to sustain them in the field. These teachers’ narratives offer significant insights for teacher education to better prepare teachers of Color for long, effective, and transformative careers.
