In this article, the authors discuss three trends that are reshaping our world and the ways we get work done. The authors then discuss the implications of these trends, both for how we educate our young and how we train and develop our teachers. To that end, the authors propose an approach to teacher training and professional development situated entirely in K-12 schools. The authors outline design principles for such an approach. The authors illustrated with examples from the High Tech High Graduate School of Education.

This article uses Foucault's notion of parrhesia to analyse the story of another and to interrogate teacher education in terms of the particular moral order or the forms of socialization that it uses. The author examines the context of her own teaching in terms of truth-telling and the normative expectations that were found to exist. Through reflection and analysis and using the patterns of action research came the realization that some of what we do within teacher education examines a student's moral performance rather than their pedagogical ability.

In this article, the authors describe a cosmopolitan orientation toward the place of values in human life. The authors argue that a cosmopolitan outlook can assist people in engaging the challenges of being thrown together with others whose roots, traditions, and inheritances differ. The authors show that cosmopolitanism illuminates how people everywhere can retain individual and cultural integrity while also keeping themselves open to the larger world. The authors examine three arts, or artful methods, that can fuel this orientation. The authors show how these arts can be cultivated continuously through education.

Carl Bereiter asked what it means to be an educated person in the 21st century and what contribution a liberal education can make in addressing this question. This paper is essentially constructed around Bereiter's question. It draws on some of the classic literature in the field as well as more recent scholarship that raises issues concerning the historical idea of a liberal education and points to new directions for the future.

This article describes the principles and the actualization of Korczak's moral education and explores how Korczak reconciled the differences between the ethical world he created in his institutions and the surrounding immoral society. The example set by Korczak's educational praxis serves as an inspiring model of school life across the boundaries of time and place and touches our need to believe in education's responsibility to strive and struggle for a better world, even when it seems an unattainable goal.
