This article discusses the research regarding the formation and role of networks, and factors to consider when assessing the impact and outcomes of a network. It also looks at the connections between networks and action research (AR), and moves to a focus on the Evaluative Study of Action Research (ESAR), currently in its first stages, and outlines four levels of networks associated with the study. Finally, this article provides an early formative analysis with regard to the impact and outcomes of the ESAR team as a network to date. The authors conclude that the ESAR network provides evidence of each factor of well-functioning networks. Formative evaluations will continue for how the team network functions, as well as how each of the networks that develop functions as the research is undertaken.

This paper presents and discusses the findings of a research project. The project's main objective is to identify curriculum components that promote personal development as a nuclear part of teacher professional identity formation through pre-service teacher education. The curricula of four different historical periods of pre-service teacher education in Portugal and the professional identity of teachers trained within them were characterised through collection and analysis of documents and biographical narratives. Crossing results from the four periods, the quality of school climate emerges as an important variable to the quality of the teachers’ identity.

This paper introduces a tri-national research and development project. The project aims to develop indicators for the cross-sectoral and interdisciplinary educational task ‘education for sustainable development’ (ESD). These indicators are meant to help monitor the implementation of ESD efforts in schools and institutions of higher education. The article focuses on how a variety of stakeholders are included in the process of developing a set of ESD indicators in the course of the project.

The purpose of this paper was to understand whether the long‐held beliefs about the importance of mentoring would be revealed as what actually occurs in an undergraduate research program. The authors describe students’ perceptions of the mentoring process and students’ beliefs about how it impacted their experiences as undergraduate researchers and their development as scientists. The authors also described are professors’ perceptions of their roles and effectiveness as mentors in students’ development as scientists. As this grounded research study shows, students and professors described student gains as increased technical expertise and communication skills.

The current paper describes the author's exploration in using arts-based techniques for teaching research to support the development of students' self-study research projects. The author employed three arts-based research projects to assist doctoral students in articulating research interests, framing research proposals, and reflecting on their development as researchers.

This article reports on a programme in which senior advisers from different regions in Croatia developed action research projects in Croatian schools. The authors wanted to learn: How educational action research might be used by advisers and teachers in Croatia; and how educational action research is understood in this context. The authors found that the concept of action research was thoroughly understood by nearly all the advisers; the principles of action research were produced evidence of practical change, collaboration and mutual understanding.

Teachers have long participated in collaborative research. However, they have generally had direct stakes in the outcomes. Teachers in the Early Professional Learning (EPL) Project used their insider status to gather data not directly related to their own practice. Lessons for integrating a group of teacher–researchers into a major project are discussed.

The paper examines the potential contradictions of conducting a collaborative self-study research project within a poststructural framework. In particular, the author considers how humanist discourses are challenged by poststructural theory. She also discusses about the use of theory in self-study research. The author provides a poststructural analysis of the use of experience in the self-study data to demonstrate ways in which theory can support us to (re)view taken for granted concepts in education.

One way to help preservice teachers to articulate and advocate their teaching stance is by developing their knowledge, skills, and confidence in their ability to carefully, didactically, and strategically plan for instruction. The Integrative Research Project (IRP) is a planning process that enables the preservice teacher to incorporate developmentally appropriate practices in an authentic inquiry-based planning process. It also enables the preservice teacher to incorporate goals, objectives, and standards for learning. The IRP provides the preservice teachers with the kind of long-term planning that is so necessary to become an effective teacher.

How is the usefulness of research assessed as university research becomes more and more commodified? The question is addressed through an analysis of how the results of a particular research project were received in a large private company that had provided the main funding for a research project on gender and top management, a project based on poststructuralist approaches.
