The current article takes a broader look at the consequences of cognitive ability—IQ—across the life course. Among persons with equal levels of schooling, IQ has little influence on job performance, occupational standing, earnings, or wealth. But there are other, sometimes surprising consequences of IQ throughout adult life. The long-term correlates of adolescent cognition include drinking behavior, survey participation, Internet use, and the timing of menopause. These are surveyed primarily using findings from the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study.

The participants in Boston College's 'Teachers for a New Era' Evidence Team designed a portfolio of assessments and studies in order to make decisions about teacher education policy and practice that were informed by research and evidence. This paper describes one project in the portfolio - a series of surveys that trace teacher candidates' experiences over time and track shifts in these experiences as respondents progress from students during the pre-service period to teachers in the first few years of work in the profession.

The author explores the challenges and promises of value-added assessment. Yet, value-added assessment is limited in its explanatory powers because it focuses only on certain types of knowledge and needs to be used in conjunction with other estimates. As such, the author provides a variety of perspectives to help educational stakeholders explore the assessment not just as a new test but rather as a promising and potentially damaging lever of change in school cultures.

The Impossibility of Minority Ethnic Educational ‘Success’? An Examination of the Discourses of Teachers and Pupils in British Secondary Schools
This article argues that in Britain dominant educational discourses of ‘the ideal pupil’ exclude minority ethnic pupils and prevent them from inhabiting a position of authentic ‘success’. It suggests that ‘the successful pupil’ is a desired yet refused subject position for many minority ethnic young people – even for those who are (to some extent) performing educational success.

Effects of International Comparative Studies on Educational Quality on the Quality of Educational Research
Strengths and weaknesses of different research approaches are discussed, and it is proposed that the dichotomy between qualitative and quantitative approaches should be replaced with distinctions between low- and high-level inference approaches with respect to data, generalization and explanation. It is concluded that while the international studies easily invite misuse and misinterpretation, they also offer possibilities for improving the quality of educational research, because the high-quality data generated by these studies can be taken advantage of in research on causal effects of factors in and out of educational systems.
