This article investigates how the use of Pupil Views Templates (PVTs) supports teachers' professional learning. This article reports on a three-year collaborative practitioner enquiry project involving more than 30 primary and secondary schools in England. Links between the tools used, the source of the feedback, and teachers' learning are mapped from a 'second order perspective' derived from the diverse data sources.

This article starts with a brief review of the recent history of teacher research in the UK in order to consider how pre- and in-service teachers are currently positioned in relation to research. Drawing on the case of the Scottish Schools of Ambition, the article identifies some of the challenges and opportunities presented by sponsored research engagement. The article suggests that teacher educators may have an important contribution to make to building capacity through teacher enquiry given their position as mediators between schools and university faculties of education.

The article describes research into the role of collaborations and partnerships between universities and schools. It encompasses 12 years studies into school-university collaborative. The study documented interviews, case studies and project reports, and concluded that the model of the exchanges between partners is fruitful in unraveling the relationship between theory and practice in the pursuit of knowledge about teaching and learning.
