Mathematics Field Experience Design: The Role of Teaching Experiments and Lesson Study One Year Later During Student Teaching
The authors engaged preservice teachers in a redesigned mathematics field experience with a central focus on children’s reasoning through teaching experiments and purposeful reflection on practice through Lesson Study. Indicators of effective teaching were examined through analysis of lesson plans and enactment, comparing student teachers who participated in the revised approach with student teachers in conventional forms of field experience. Findings suggest that teaching aspects fostered by the revised approach during the field experience had a positive residual effect during student teaching. Those who took part in teaching experiments and lesson study had lesson plans that provided for sense-making, encouraged collaboration, and included investigative mathematics to a greater degree than those in the conventional group. Those in the revised group implemented lessons during student teaching that were more student-centered and considerate of classroom culture than those who took part in the conventional field experience. We provide recommendations for designing field experiences.

Professional Development of Multi-experienced Educators through a Book Study: Fostering Mentoring Relationships
The authors examined how participants’ interactions during a book study influenced their perceptions of practice. Specifically, the authors were interested in understanding what the participants noticed from these interactions and how they conceptualized their thoughts from the mentorship engagement with others. The findings reveal that this book club was a positive experience for fostering partnerships and informal mentorship relationships. The participants were aware of their interactions with others and considered these relationships supportive for their careers. The authors conclude that implementing a book club as an informal professional development model may have positive outcomes for participants as they foster partnerships and develop increased understandings.

The present study utilized an innovative methodological approach to capture the noticing of preservice teachers using wearable cameras while they were in an introspective position within the elementary classroom context. Findings indicate that differences exist in the ability for preservice teachers to mark noticing as compared to practicing teachers.

Animations as a Transformational Approximation of Practice for Preservice Teachers to Communicate Professional Noticing
This article explores the use of animations as an approximation of practice to provide a transformational technology experience for elementary mathematics preservice teachers. Findings illuminate preservice teachers’ degrees of specificity, with most preservice teachers being more specific about mathematics in their animations, showing promise for animation as a tool for communicating what is noticed. Further, preservice teachers perceived the use of animations a transformational experience, meaning the technological medium provided learning and access beyond what could have been accomplished without the technological support.
