This study aimed to explore the mentoring experience within the context of a science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) specific mentoring program for urban, at risk, high school youth. The authors found that a common theme that touched on all PAMI constructs was that communication with scholars was crucial to success. Specifically, they argue that communication impacted the relationship emphasis, the facilitative focus, the confrontive focus, and mentor modeling.

This article aims to provoke debate and discussion about teacher education futures, with particular reference to the interactions between knowledge and technology, within the teacher education community. The authors employed futures methodologies based on scenario creation. In these scenarios, the authors play out how and why changing versions of knowledge and their interactions with technology impact on teacher education. The authors note that in these scenarios, technology is primarily referred to in terms of its relationship to knowledge building and acquisition. They argued that the scenarios offer a dialectic between the influence of knowledge and that of technology. They also argue that these scenarios have a practical value in offering alternatives, encouraging debate.

This article argues that because mobile technologies are overtaking personal computers as the primary tools of Internet access, new forms of teaching and assessment are required to foster 21st century literacies, including those needed by K–12 teachers. Mobile technologies' unique affordances for teaching and assessment can create unique distributed task environments for learning and assessment. The author illustrates SimSchool as an example of a computer simulation designed for teacher education that utilizes mobile computing affordances.

The present study applied an Integrated Triadic Model (ITM) to a social studies methods course and measured the extent that preservice teachers’ TPACK changed. The study also gathered beliefs about the effectiveness of course activities for developing TPACK. The application of the ITM created and enhanced course activities that contributed to the development of preservice teachers’ TPACK.

The purpose of this study was to better understand how preservice teachers’ participation in a technology-focused early field experience called Tech Club influenced their perceptions of teaching and learning. Findings highlight the importance of early field experiences and establish a rationale for providing preservice teachers early opportunities to practice with technology in authentic contexts.

Pre-service Teachers’ Development of Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) in the Context of a Secondary Science Teacher Education Program
This study explores pre-service teachers’ TPACK development in a secondary science teacher education program that combined a content-specific technology integration course with extensive field experience. Findings indicated that a content-specific technology integration course offered simultaneously with extensive field experience through careful instructional design can improve pre-service teachers’ understanding of combining technology with science content and pedagogy.

This article focuses on the challenge that could be broadly termed as ‘the digitisation of academic work’. However, this article stresses the concrete composition of academic work without making any general presumptions regarding how the university looks at present. The article concludes that it makes not much sense any more to talk about academic practice in terms of humans or non-humans, material or digital, etc. Instead, perhaps it makes more sense to speak of actors in academic practice as being human-digital.

This study aimed to field-test several conferencing technologies in regional schools to determine whether the technologies are appropriate for the needs of the university supervisor, trainee teachers and supervising teachers in practicum placements. The study also explored the potential of technology for other related purposes. Four technologies (Pocket camcorder, m-View, Skype, Adobe Connect) were trialed. Findings revealed that Pocket camcorders gave good video quality and were very portable.

The authors examined the effect of a new academic mentoring program on student academic integration, success and persistence. Specifically, the authors focused on the MIRES program (Mentoring for the Integration and Success of Science Students) aimed at preventing student dropout in math, science and technology. The MIRES program was implemented in two colleges in the Quebec City area. The results showed that participation in the MIRES programs had positive effects on motivation, career decision profile, college adjustment and academic success and persistence of students. The findings also revealed that the MIRES program had a greater impact on the perseverance of male, rather than female students.
