The author reflects on the experience of being a participant in the Work of Teacher Education (WoTE) research, and draws on conceptualisations of teacher education as domestic labour. She argues that teacher educators’ closeness to classroom practice acts as a determining factor in their symbolic annihilation, a concept usually applied to study of the media that argues that the absence of representation, or underrepresentation, of some groups of people is a means of maintaining social inequality.

There and Back Again: Exploring Teacher Attrition and Mobility with Two Transitioning Science Teachers
The current study chronicled the professional journeys of two beginning science teachers. The study documents what brought them to science teaching and investigated their resulting career paths. Implications for science teacher education indicate that some teachers may enter the profession considering teaching to be a transition into a different career path.

Can Good Principals Keep Teachers in Disadvantaged Schools? Linking Principal Effectiveness to Teacher Satisfaction and Turnover in Hard-to-Staff Environments
Little research has examined the reasons for elevated teacher turnover in schools with large numbers of traditionally disadvantaged students. The current study hypothesizes that school working conditions help explain both teacher satisfaction and turnover. In particular, this study focuses on the role of effective principals in retaining teachers, particularly in disadvantaged schools with the greatest staffing challenges.

Pre-service and Beginning Teachers’ Professional Identity and its relation to Dropping Out of the Profession
The current study examines different perceptions of pre-service and beginning teachers’ professional identity in relation to their decisions to leave the profession. The findings revealed that pre-service teachers tended to have naïve and idealistic perceptions of teaching. Furthermore, dropout teachers showed most emotional burnout.

This article reports on a qualitative interview study with eleven pre-service primary teachers in Queensland. The study examines their career plans, exploring whether, and how, a global imagination motivates this next generation of teachers. The analysis of the interview data reveals the kind of impact these possibilities make on how pre-service teachers imagine their career, and what other considerations enhance or limit their global imagination. The findings are used to reflect on the highly localised governance of pre-service teacher preparation.

In recent years, it has been reported that an alarming number of teachers are leaving the profession in the first three years after graduation from a pre-service program. In this study, Ontario graduates from a two year pre-service program were surveyed and 5 teachers were selected for case studies. Participants found administrative leadership, refining the mentorship selection process, hiring practices, and district-sponsored supports as positive factors necessary for them to grow into the profession.

Drawing upon a range of research, this article seeks to explore how and why teachers in the third and fourth decades of their professional lives sustain or do not sustain their beliefs and sense of commitment to teaching at its best. The authors address the challenges regarding veteran teachers' commitment and resilience by illustrating the stories of two teachers.The illustrations of two veteran teachers provide three important messages for researchers, school leaders and policy-makers interested in understanding teachers' work, lives and effectiveness and raising and maintaining standards.

Research suggests that substantial pre-service student teaching is essential for the preparation and retention of special educators. The purpose of this study is to contrast the effects of length of pre-service student teaching received against other variables that exist within a pre-service preparation program. It was found that substantial pre-service student teaching experience has a strong effect on the probability that a beginning special educator will remain in the field 1 year. In addition, none of the effects of aspects of teacher pre-service preparation or teacher or school demographics analyzed had an impact on attrition, when controlling for the number of weeks of student teaching.

A Two-Dimensional Model of Teacher Retention and Mobility: Classroom Teachers and Their University Partners Take a Closer Look at a Vexing Problem
This mixed-methods study is a teacher-initiated, collaborative inquiry involving a professional development school (PDS) and a university. The examination focused on teachers’ perceptions of teacher retention and mobility at their PDS. Participants were 134 teachers at a large, suburban elementary school in the southeastern United States.The findings clustered around two primary dimensions: (a) congruency of teachers’ beliefs and practices with organizational norms and (b) teachers’ relational needs and administrators’ willingness and ability to meet such needs.
